On the valley floor below Motovun, Livade is a natural starting point for understanding Istrian truffles. Its story also connects with the former Parenzana railway. Arrange a tasting or a guided experience with a local operator, and ask which truffles are actually in season. The surrounding forest is a sensitive landscape, not an invitation to forage independently.

Experiences

Begin with a conversation about season, species and provenance. White truffles are particularly associated with autumn, but weather and availability matter more than a calendar promise. Ask a local operator about permissions, terrain, footwear, group size and cancellations before arranging a hunt. At the table, ask whether a dish uses fresh truffle or an infused product. An informed tasting is more rewarding than a list of expensive ingredients.

Travel notes

A car or a pre-arranged transfer gives flexibility between dispersed villages. Do not assume a frequent bus connection between every stop. Historic centres can involve steep streets, steps and restricted vehicle access; check parking and accessibility with your host. For wine tastings, arrange a driver before the first glass.

These are living villages and working landscapes. Keep private entrances clear, ask before photographing people, carry your litter out and stay on signed paths. Forest access and truffle collecting are regulated: use an authorised local operator rather than entering or collecting independently. Outdoor conditions can change after rain.
